Hi everyone, welcome to Judaism: A Cultural Exploration Through Food! Over the next two and a half months, I will be taking a deep dive into Jewish cultures through the cuisines they have created and cooking their recipes. As a Jew myself, I was always intrigued by how other types of Jews practiced their religion and culture. I have gotten used to the Americanized Ashkenazi Jewish Food that most of us are familiar with, such as matzo ball soup, bagels with lox and cream cheese, latkes, and blintzes for example. Now, I love this food and have been surrounded by it my whole life but I often wonder about what my Bubbe's mother from Russia would've made, or what Sephardic (or Western European) Jews eat, Israeli and Middle Eastern Jews eat, and even go into isolated Jewish communities such as the Igbo (Nigerian), Moroccan and Ethiopian Jews and finding out how their food differs. I have realized that over the course of time, the persecution of the Jewish people has led to a large diaspora of Jews around the world, all carving out their own unique culture, cultures that I want to explore. This diaspora has led to what I believe is a disconnect between modern Jews to the anscestors of these modern Jews from isolated towns in Europe and the Middle East. I am so excited to learn new methods of Jewish cooking and find new recipes from around the world and enrich myself in Jewish culture. So I invite you to come on this journey with me, as I cook my way through different parts of my own religion and culture. Time Line/ Rescources: Each week I will get the necessary ingredients to make the dish. Aftert making the dish, I will get my family to taste it so that I can have unbiased judges of cooking. I will use recipes either from old family cookbooks, or research on the internet for some dishes that might be a little more peculiar or foreign to me. I will try to make the dishes more challenging over time, as I also want to better my cooking skills through all of this. At the end, I hope to be able to have a lot of dishes I know I can cook and be able to call myself a more cultured chef.
