Looking back on these past two and a half months, it is safe
to say that I have eaten well. I have also been able to expose myself to parts of
my culture I wasn’t able to experience. I honestly really enjoyed this project. I got
to do something I enjoyed and learn through it. Being able to also see what
other Jews around the world eat was also a fascinating experience. My first two weeks started off a bit rocky,
but once I got my footing on what I had to do each week from there, stuff went
perfect. Although I still think baking soda and powder do the same thing, so I
guess I still have some to learn.
This was also my first time cooking a lot of really serious
dishes. Normally if I am cooking, I do things that are incredibly simple and
have just a few steps. Doing dishes that took hours to prepare was a completely
new experience and challenge for me. I thought that I was just going to show up
and cook and that it would be about an hour each week to do what I needed, but
it really ended up being anywhere from an hour to a full 24.
Being able to taste new flavors from other places also
taught me a lot about what food can taste like. These dishes all went far beyond
the usual depth, sweetness, and richness I associate with Jewish food. Some
dishes added a spice element or had a freshness to them. This shows me how Jews
around the world have intertwined their own culture into Jewish cooking.
I hope that cooking continues to be a regular thing for me and that I am able to not only continue to explore Jewish culture but all
cultures through food in the future.
